Student’s Rights
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is an academic community in which all persons share responsibility for its quality and well being. As members of the University community, students can reasonable expect all the guarantees and protections afforded students of public institutions by the United States and Nevada Constitutions, including:
- Right to fair process guaranteeing substantive rights and equitable procedures in all matters pursuant to this code
- Right to exercise their freedoms without fear of University interference
- Right to be free from discrimination on the basis of race, gender, age, religion, creed, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation
- Right to freedom of speech in inquiry, discussion, writing, speaking and printing on any subject in accordance with the guarantees of federal and state laws
- Right to engage in peaceful and orderly speech, protest, demonstration and picketing within the public forum to the extent that such activities do not disrupt the educational functions of the University (Please note that the University reserves the right, in accordance with federal and state laws, to approve the time, place and manner of such activities.)
- The opportunity to participate in the formulation of policy directly affecting students through membership on appropriate committees as determined by the President of the University, the student government and other recognized groups within the University.
- Ready access to established University policies and procedures.
- Protection from unreasonable search and seizure
Student’s Right in a Disciplinary Process
Based on the Student Conduct Code, the rights of students whose conduct is under review by the Office of Student conduct is as follows:
- Written notice of alleged violation(s) from the Office of Student Conduct including a description of the charges, the person you will meet with and the date by which that contact must occur
- Explanation of all procedural options such as Formal Resolution and Informal Resolution
- Right to be assisted by any advisor you choose at your own expense. While your advisor may be an attorney, advisors are not permitted to speak on behalf of either the complainant or the charged student.
- In a formal hearing, you and your advisor have the right to examine any supporting documentation to be presented at the hearing at least seven (7) calendar days prior to the hearing during regular business hours.
- Both the complainant and the charged student may present and question witnesses.
- All hearings are closed unless you request an open hearing.
Right to appear at a hearing to hear all evidence, offer explanation and clarify information and evidence
- Right to choose to not attend the hearing
- Right to present and question witnesses at hearing
- Right to a copy of the audio tape of your formal hearing which must be requested in written form
- Right to appeal an adverse decision which must be filed within fourteen (14) calendar days from the your receipt of findings
