President's Reception for the International Community The UNLV President, Neal J. Smatresk, invites you to a special reception in your honor this Thursday August 27, 2009 3pm at the Tam Alumni Center (TAC building, #81). The doors open at 2:45pm and the program begins at 3:00pm. You will have an opportunity to take a photo with the President (time permitting) and there will be free food and drink. No RSVP required. This reception is to celebrate the importance of international students and scholars at UNLV. I hope I will see you there. OPT Applications begin September 14! If you complete the last course credits** required for your major in December 2009 and you wish to apply for your 12 months of Optional Practical Training, you need to apply in September or October. OPT is issued directly by USCIS and they require 3 months processing time. Remember, you cannot start working UNTIL you receive your OPT card! **NOTE ABOUT OPT: USCIS considers you “graduated” after the completion of your last credit-earning class no matter when you will participate in the graduation ceremony. HOW TO APPLY FOR OPT –
The mission of ACE is to provide a structured opportunity for incoming students (undergraduate or graduate) from diverse and international backgrounds to participate in a peer mentoring program. The goal is to help incoming students be successful at UNLV and beyond. Participants will be intentionally paired up with a student who has successfully completed at least one year at UNLV. In addition, participants will commit to other components of ACE such as skill-building workshops and academic guidance sessions. Students who complete ACE will be formally recognized for their accomplishments and will be expected to be excellent student leaders at UNLV. See http://unlvace.webs.com for more details and to sign up! H-1B Employment Visa WorkshopWorkshop is held in the Spring. Check back with OISS in the Spring 2010 semester for more information about this workshop.
