OISS SERVICES FOR INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARS
The Office of International Students & Scholars (OISS) provides
professional support services to the UNLV community and their international
scholars. OISS provides assistance and advice regarding employment,
visa, travel, and immigration issues. OISS also helps facilitate international
scholars’ transition to the U.S. and campus community.
Any person who IS NOT a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident of the
U.S. is required by federal law to seek employment authorization from
U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services before commencing employment
in the U.S.
WHO IS CONSIDERED AN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLAR?
They are faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars, visiting professors
and researchers who are NOT U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents (“Green
Card” holders). They may or may not be paid by UNLV.
NEW TO WORKING WITH INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARS?
OISS holds training sessions for departmental staff who work with international
scholars on campus. Contact the International Scholar Advisor at 895-0143
for more information. If you have questions about your department’s
international scholars, including people in J-1, H-1B, or TN status,
please contact OISS at 895-0143 or send an e-mail to issssc@unlv.edu.
DETERMINING THE APPROPRIATE VISA TYPE
Contact the International Scholar Advisor at 895-0143 to determine
which visa type would be most appropriate for your prospective international
scholar. The Quick Guide to Hiring International Faculty/Staff/Scholars may be helpful in determining the appropriate visa, but contact OISS
before completing any department request forms.

SHORT-TERM VISITORS
If your department is inviting a non-U.S. citizen or permanent resident to lecture or consult and you are only reimbursing expenses or paying an honorarium, contact Debbie Kargard in the Office of Disbursements at 895-1243 or dkargard@ccmail.nevada.edu
The following categories are not true employment
categories, and may ONLY be paid travel expenses and per diem by
business contacts - (
also okay for "nonpay "or "volunteer" appointments
).
B-1 Visitor for Business:
• department sends letter of invitation to prospective
short-term visitor
• prospective short-term visitor applies for B-1 visa at U.S. Consulate
in his or her home country
WB or W1 - Waiver Program - Visitor for
Business:
• prospective short-term visitor initiates the
request for WB or W1 upon entry to the U.S. (with letter of invitation
if visit is for business
purposes)
• NOTE: This category is only available to citizens of certain countries.
The prospective short-term visitor should check with the U.S. Consulate/Embassy
to see if this program is available to him/her.
