Health and Safety
The UNLV Police Department emphasizes community policing. Interactions
between the department and the community we serve is encouraged
at all levels and has been internally developed by public safety
as a contract with the community.
The department is also involved in a number of community relations
activities through the public safety departments crime prevention
office. As a result, our statistics have been consistently lower
than the crime statistics of the surrounding urban area.
The Department of Public Safety's primary goal is the safety of
the students and employees of the University System. By taking part
in the university community through active participation in the
university's governance processes, design and safety planning, lectures,
crime prevention presentations, safety tours, and other activities
in conjunction with other non-university related agencies like the
local fire department, county and state public works, local television
and newspaper media plus local and regional law enforcement, the
public safety department has developed it’s community policing
strategy to promote safety through education and prevention.
Working with facility designers and engineers, residential life,
the university administration, student government and the student
newspaper, facility security has been enhanced through the use of
state of the art card access, point entry, fire and panic alarm
systems used with secondary locking devices which secure the various
entries against unauthorized access into our residence halls, science
buildings, library, and other areas frequented by students and staff
after hours.
Additionally, the residence halls are monitored at each key access
entrance to verify identification of students and visitors during
the evening hours. Public Safety participates in all of the student
and parent orientations to insure that the proper information is
made available concerning safety and security.
Additionally, crime prevention presentations made by public safety,
along with various public safety programs (Operation ID, Bike Registration)
encourage students and employees to be responsible for their own
security and the security of others.
Additionally, with
the installation of 64 highly visible emergency telephones around
the campus mall and parking lots, public safety can be easily contacted
by anyone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by these direct connect
ADA approved telephone devices. Upon activation, officers are dispatched
immediately and are enroute while dispatchers are speaking with
or attempting to learn why the call box was activated.
Student Security, a program operated by Public Safety, is available
for those students and employees who need escorts to any campus
area during the evening hours and avoids the necessity of someone
having to walk alone to their vehicle, residence hall or classroom.
Lectures are given to students, faculty and staff on a range of
subjects including the prevention of sexual assault, robbery, theft
and a seminar on gangs. Our crime prevention and bicycle patrol
unit has designed booklets for children and parents of children
in our day care facility, staff, faculty and students on crime related
problems and bicycle theft and various tactics and services available
for use. Public safety participates with a number of administrative
units on a yearly safety tour of the campus that checks such things
as lighting levels, proper trimming of landscapes and other physical
security concerns. The department is also actively involved in doing
security surveys of the existing campus buildings.
Public Safety works closely with the student newspaper to publish
crime summaries on a weekly basis and the monthly on-campus publication
"Update" is also provided crime information. In addition
the department produces and distributes "Crime Alert Bulletins"
to notify the campus community of specific crime problems in their
area and maintains an informative WEB site on the internet accessible
through the UNLV home pages providing information and interactive
contact with public safety employees. We work closely with groups
on campus such as Residential Life and the Women's center to facilitate
programs for interested parties.
Crime prevention is a community effort.
Public Safety needs the cooperation of everyone to facilitate a
safe environment, which is the reason several presentations are available
for students, staff and faculty. Such areas of interest are:
- Sexual Assault Prevention Lecture - Use your head to protect
your body.
- How to report suspicious or criminal activity on campus.
- Possession and use of weapons.
- Residence hall security.
- Tips for a safe campus.
- Bicycle registration and protection.
Any of these presentations may be scheduled and we urge you to
contact our department to make arrangements.
