Counseling and Psychological Services

Student Services Offered

Confidential services offered to assist students manage the adjustment demands and developmental challenges of college include:

  • Brief, time-effective individual counseling
  • Brief, time-effective couples counseling (at least one member of the couple must be a currently enrolled UNLV student)
  • Crisis assessment and intervention
  • Medication evaluation and management
  • Psychological assessment and testing
  • Eating disorder assessment and treatment
  • Drug and alcohol use assessment
  • Consultation to campus community members
  • Educational workshops and presentations
  • Student consultations where students considering leaving school can discuss their decision with one of our professional counselors
  • Referrals to community resources for students who have needs beyond the resources at CAPS

Faculty and Staff Services Offered

Services are offered to support faculty and staff as they respond to students' transition to, matriculation through, and departure from the university. These include:

  • consultation
  • information and resource distribution
  • training
  • educational programming.

These interventions are intended to expand the scope of available day to day support to the students.

Confidentiality

Professional ethical codes and state laws consider the personal information discussed in counseling to be confidential. All information gathered in counseling, including the fact that the student has come to Student Psychological Services, is held in strict confidence. No information is released to university officials, faculty members, parents or outside agencies without written authorization from the student.

An exception to the law is when there is imminent danger of serious harm to the client or others. In this instance, the counselor must take action to prevent harm.
